Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) is an oceanographic research institute in Woods Hole , Massachusetts , founded in 1930.

It awards degrees together with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology .

The institution is to be distinguished from the separate Marine Biological Laboratory (Marine Biological Laboratory), which is also located in Woods Hole.

The WHOI's first research ship Atlantis was the inspiration for the space shuttle Atlantis .
