The research vessel Atlantis was operated from 1931 to 1966 by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution , Massachusetts . It was a 460 ton ketch equipped with two masts. The Atlantis was the first US ship to be used for oceanographic research . It was also the namesake for the space shuttle Atlantis .

Since 1966, the ketch served the Argentine Prefectura Naval Argentina as El Austral . Under the name of Dr. Bernardo Houssay , a replica of the El Austral was created and the original ship was scrapped.
