The Klang is a 120 km long river in western Malaysia that flows through the capital Kuala Lumpur and flows into the Strait of Malacca at Port Klang .

geography

The sound originates in the highlands about 25 km northeast of the capital. It flows through the city of the same name, Klang, and gave its name to Kuala Lumpur, which means muddy river mouth . The main tributaries are Gombak , Batu, Kerayong, Damansara, Keruh, Kuyoh, Penchala and Ampang.

use

The valley is one of the most polluted areas in the country; the river itself is also heavily polluted with sewage. The industrial region is supplied from Port Klang in the delta . In 2004 Port Klang was the seventh largest port in the world. The strong development of the bank narrows the sound and regularly leads to flooding in Kuala Lumpur. Two dams serve to irrigate an area of around 1288 km².

At the end of 2006, a private company was granted the rights to use the river, especially for the extraction of sand. The 30-year contract also includes a clause obliging the company to significantly improve water quality by 2010. SMART , a large drainage tunnel, aims to reduce flooding in the capital.
