The Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel , or SMART for short , is a tunnel in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur . The tunnel was built from June 2004 to May 2007 by the German company Wayss & Freytag from Frankfurt am Main . It was built in two sections with a length of 5400 and 4050 m using the so-called shield tunneling method . Around 50 cm thick and 1.70 m long segments were installed. Eight of these segments form a ring together with a terminal stone.

In the middle section, approx. 3 km of the tunnel will encompass three levels after completion, the top two each being intended for two lanes of North Drive. These two are connected to each other in regular sections via crosscuts so that the other level can be used as an escape route in the event of an accident. The lower third level is used to drain off floods during the monsoon season . A special feature is that the tunnel can be closed in the event of particularly heavy rainfall and the two upper tubes can also be used to drain the flood.

The machines used for the construction had an outside diameter of 13.21 m and an output of 4,000 kW . These generated a torque of 24,400 kNm.
