Alfred R. Loeblich

Alfred "Al" Richard Loeblich, Jr. (born August 15, 1914 in Birmingham , Jefferson County , Alabama ; † September 9, 1994 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American micropalaeontologist and foraminifera researcher. His botanical author's abbreviation (he also described single-cell organisms counted among the algae ) is “ Loebl. ".

Life

In 1939 he married Helen Tappan (Helen Loeblich), whom he had met while studying at the University of Oklahoma . Almost all research papers and publications up until his death were done together. Loeblich was mostly active as a collector and evaluator, his wife as a documentator. Loeblich went to the University of Chicago with his wife after graduation, then taught at Tulane University , was drafted during World War II and in the 1950s he was a curator at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC 1953/54 he was with his wife in Europe to prepare their monographs on foraminifera. From 1957 he was employed by the Chevron Corporation in California as a micropalaeontologist and head of a laboratory.

In 1964 the couple published two volumes on foraminifera as part of the 58-volume Treatise on Invertebrate Paleontology , which are still a standard work in micropalaeontology today, as well as the Foraminiferal genera and classification published in 1989 .

Along with his wife and Joseph Cushman , he is known to be the most important foraminifera researcher of the 20th century. In 1982 he and his wife were honored with the Paleontological Society Medal of the Paleontological Society and both received the Raymond C. Moore Medal for Paleontology (Al Loeblich 1987) and were honorary members of the Society for Sedimentary Geology (SEPM) - Al Loeblich 1984.

Her marriage to Helen Tappan had four children. His sons are Alfred R. Loeblich III. , a botanist.
