Arthur James Boucot (born May 26, 1924 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † April 10, 2017 in Denver , Colorado ) was an American paleontologist .

Career

Boucot studied at Harvard University with a bachelor's degree in 1948, a master's degree in 1949 and a doctorate in 1953. From 1949 to 1956 he was a geologist at the United States Geological Survey and then in 1956/57 as a Guggenheim Fellow in Europe. In 1957 he became an assistant professor and later an associate professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology ; from 1961 to 1968 he was an associate professor at Caltech . 1968/69 he was professor of geology at the University of Pennsylvania and at the Smithsonian Institution . From 1969 he was professor of geology (and from 1979 of zoology) at Oregon State University .

He dealt with palaeontology and stratigraphy of the Silurian and Devonian and especially of brachiopods . From 1973 he was US representative in the Silurian sub-committee of the International Commission on Stratigraphy . He dealt with marine paleoecology and paleobiogeography and inferences about evolution, behavior and extinction rates from the fossil record.

In 1985 he received the Raymond C. Moore Medal for Paleontology , in 1999 the Paleontological Society Medal and in 1990 the Natural Science Award of the Academia Sinica . In 1980/81 he was President of the Paleontological Society and from 1984 to 1989 of the International Paleontological Association. He was an honorary member of the Swedish Geological Society and a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen . Boucot is also the namesake for the Boucot Plateau in Antarctica.
