The Nevado del Huila [ neˈβaðo ðel ˈwila ] is an active volcano in the Central Cordillera of Colombia with an altitude of 5364  m . According to other, outdated sources, it is considerably higher at 5750  m . The same different information on the height of volcanoes is mostly related to their respective state at a certain point in time. The height of such mountains is constantly changing due to eruptions.

It is located in the south of Colombia in a national park of the same name. It is located in the territory of the communes of Teruel in the Huila department , Páez in Cauca and Planadas in Tolima . It owes its extensive summit glaciation to the abundance of rainfall in the region; however, the glaciers are also in decline here.

The Nevado del Huila is the highest currently active volcano in the northern hemisphere. After activity had already been observed on April 15, 2008, the most recent eruption on November 20, 2008 claimed several deaths as a result of landslides

The Nevado del Huila is particularly dangerous for the surrounding area, which is sparsely populated by Páez Indians . In the event of a major eruption, mudslides similar to those in Yungay and Armero are to be feared . A threat to the southwestern city of Popayán cannot be ruled out. The volcano is currently on the orange alert (possible eruption in days or weeks).

Due to its remote location, the Nevado del Huila is rarely visited. It is located 80 kilometers northeast of the Puracé volcano and 230 kilometers south of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano .

outbreaks

Aubruch 2007

On April 18, 2007, the volcano erupted twice, causing avalanches that crashed into the Río Paez. This caused the water levels along the Río Magdalena to rise. More than 4,000 people have been evacuated with no reported casualties.

Activity and eruption 2008

The Nevado del Huila became active again in March 2008. After a large number of earthquakes inside the volcano, the Colombian authorities declared a yellow alert on March 18. The alert level was raised to orange on March 29th. This implied that an outbreak was expected within two weeks. On April 14, 2008 at 11:08 pm, an ash eruption took place, prompting the government to set the red alert and evacuate 13,000 to 15,000 people from the area around the mountain. The red alert was lowered to orange on April 16 after reduced activity.

Outbreak in November 2008

On November 20, 2008, the volcano erupted at 2:45 p.m. GMT (9:45 p.m. local time), according to the Colombian Institute of Geology and Mining. An immediate large-scale evacuation has been initiated by the Colombian authorities, who allegedly refused the residents of some cities.

On November 23, 2008, the BBC News announced , citing the Colombian authorities, that the outbreak had claimed ten lives. 12,000 residents have been evacuated and emergency services have been unable to reach many of the more remote affected areas.

The outbreak triggered an avalanche of earth and rubble that destroyed houses, bridges and crops on plantations. The three small towns of Paicol, La Plata and Belalcázar along the Río Páez were affected by the outbreak.
