After the career
Since the beginning of December 2013 Owomoyela has been working as an expert and co-commentator for the television channel Sky Deutschland . He also comments on Bundesliga games for international television in English. From August 2014 he will be an expert on the radio soccer broadcast 1Live Elfer , Owomoyela was previously on the radio program of 1Live , including the soccer World Cup 2014 .
Together with Norbert Dickel , Owomoyela, who has been BVB's brand ambassador since 2018, commented on matches played by the Dortmund team for the club's own television channel on direct broadcasts. During a broadcast of a preparatory game against Udinese Calcio in the summer of 2019, Owomoyela copied Adolf Hitler's voice , Dickel denigrated the BVB opponent's players as "Itaker". The club management then emphasized in a press release that Owomoyela's and Dickel's attempt to “be funny” had “gone completely wrong” and was “absolutely out of place”. According to BVB, “such statements” “have no place with us”. Owomoyela and Dickel apologized publicly for their behavior and, according to the Bild newspaper, were no longer used as commentators by BVB for the time being.
NPD incident
For the 2006 World Cup , the right-wing extremist NPD published a “World Cup Planner” as a leaflet , on the front of which was a jersey of the German national team with the number 25 (Owomoyela's shirt number in the national team). Underneath was the slogan “White - not just a jersey color! For a real NATIONAL team ”. In April 2009, the NPD functionaries Udo Voigt , Frank Schwerdt and Klaus Beier were sentenced in the first instance for insulting Owomoyela in a hateful manner. In March 2011, the defendants were acquitted in an appeal process. The Berlin public prosecutor put Revision A against the second-instance verdict. This was granted on March 27, 2012 by the Berlin Regional Court due to errors in the evidence and the proceedings were referred back to the Berlin Regional Court. On May 14, 2014 Voigt, Schwerdt and Beier were sentenced again in the first instance.
Honors, awards and engagement off the field
On November 9th, 2006 Owomoyela was awarded the Udo Lindenberg Prize for his commitment to combating xenophobia during the 9th Bremen Youth Night . At the beginning of 2007, he and Klaus-Dieter Fischer and Bremer Straßenbahn AG presented a track for “fairness on the soccer field”. This is designed with a picture of Owomoyela and appeals against right-wing extremist violence.
