Norbert "Nobby" Dickel (born November 27, 1961 in Berghausen in Wittgensteiner Land ) is a former German soccer player who played a total of 123 Bundesliga games for 1. FC Köln and Borussia Dortmund between 1984 and 1990, scoring 45 goals.

Life

After an apprenticeship as a toolmaker , Dickel signed up for four years as a contract soldier in the German Armed Forces in 1982 . At the same time, the center forward played amateur soccer victories at Sportfreunde . In 1984 he signed a contract as a professional footballer with 1. FC Köln and left the Bundeswehr.

1. FC Cologne

Dickel moved from Sportfreunde Siegen in 1984 from the Westphalian amateur league to the professional camp at 1. FC Köln . At Cologne he was not a regular player, he played 33 games in two years and scored five goals. In the final of the 1986 UEFA Cup against Real Madrid , which was lost 5-1, he was substituted on in the 84th minute of the game.

Borussia Dortmund

After two years in Cologne, the center forward moved to Borussia Dortmund in 1986 , where he scored 20 goals in 32 Bundesliga games in his first season under coach Reinhard Saftig , making him one of the most popular Dortmund players. Dickel Stammkraft was in the attacking formation of BVB under both Saftig and his successor Horst Köppel . On September 13, 1988, Dickel managed the third-fastest hat-trick in the history of the Bundesliga in a 4-0, 3-0 and 4-0 goal in seven minutes (67–73) in a 4-0 win against Hannover 96.

Due to his achievements and the tragic course of the 1988/89 season for him , Norbert Dickel enjoys cult status with Dortmund fans to this day: At the end of that season he seriously injured his knee and suffered cartilage damage and a meniscus damage, but coach Köppel still offered him for the DFB Cup final against Werder Bremen . In this game, Dickel scored two goals and thus contributed significantly to the 4-1 victory and thus to Dortmund's first major success since winning the European Cup in 1966. After this game he was nicknamed "Held von Berlin."

Afterwards, Dickel was never able to gain a foothold in the Bundesliga again. In the 1989/90 season he made a comeback six times, finally had to give up and ended his professional career as a sports invalid . He played his last game on December 15, 1989 in Düsseldorf. In the 1-1 draw against Fortuna Düsseldorf , Dickel scored his 40th and last competitive goal in the 90th minute in his 90th game for Borussia Dortmund.

The fans of Borussia Dortmund have immortalized this fate in their own chant: "We sing Norbert, Norbert, Norbert Dickel, everyone knows him, the hero of Berlin." , Sung to the theme song by Flipper .

After the career

After the abrupt end of his career, Dickel sold drive drums for conveyor belt systems for one of the club sponsors of BVB, after which he was employed by the then supplier Nike. He later ran a kitchen studio with two partners. Ultimately, Dickel stayed loyal to Borussia Dortmund. Since the 1992/93 season he has been working in the event management of BVB, as the stadium announcer at the time, Bruno Knust , reoriented himself. In this position he is responsible for fan TV and works as a stadium announcer . In addition, he and a partner (mostly Boris Rupert ) comment on the BVB games on BVB-Netradio and in the Marketing and Sales department is responsible for sponsors, finding sponsors and their loyalty. He is often on the road as a representative of BVB. At the annual general meeting on November 20, 2016, Dickel was appointed by a large majority as a successor to the BVB's council of elders after long-time council member Aki Schmidt had died a few days earlier . Norbert Dickel is also responsible for the “Holiday Magazine”, which appears before the Bundesliga match days, and conducts interviews with Borussia Dortmund players.
