Career
Club career
Career start in the Czech Republic
Drobný began playing football at the age of six in 1985 at Slavoj Žirovnice. He went from there to SK České Budějovice in 1993 , for which he played until 1997. From there he moved to SK Chrudim in January 1998 and after half a year and nine games in the 2nd Czech league in mid-1998 to the then second division club FC Vítkovice . There he came to seven missions in the 1st team. He moved back to SK České Budějovice in July 1999 .
Moved to Athens and English league
After two years in the Gambrinus League , the goalkeeper moved to the Greek first division club Panionios Athens in 2001 , where he was a regular goalkeeper for four seasons and made a total of 101 league games.
In the summer of 2005 he was signed by Fulham FC , with whom he signed a three-year contract until 2008. However, he suffered a knee injury at the beginning of the season, after which Fulham signed Tony Warner and Antti Niemi . After his recovery, there was no room for Drobný; he was loaned to ADO Den Haag in January 2006 to collect match practice.
For the 2006/07 season he returned to Fulham, but his contract was dissolved in August 2006. On October 27, 2006 Drobný signed a one-month contract with Ipswich Town , but was not used.
Career in Germany
During the winter break, Drobný was loaned from Ipswich Town to the German Bundesliga club VfL Bochum . His contract ran until the end of the 2006/07 season . After the season he moved to the Bundesliga club Hertha BSC ; he signed a contract until 2010.
After the 2009/10 season Drobný left Hertha BSC and moved to Hamburger SV . He made his first league appearance for Hamburg on the 9th matchday when he came on as a substitute for goalkeeper Frank Rost, who had an injured knee, against Bayern Munich shortly before half-time . The game ended 0-0. For the 2011/12 season he was the goalkeeper of HSV under the new coach Michael Oenning . Although Drobný had lost his regular place due to goalkeeper René Adler , who was obliged at the beginning of the 2012/13 season , he extended his contract with HSV until mid-2015 on May 30, 2013. Since the third match day of the 2014/15 season he was again as a regular goalkeeper of the HSV in action. On the 14th matchday he held the first penalty since he moved to HSV and thus secured a point: His compatriot Vladimír Darida missed a penalty in the second minute in the game against SC Freiburg (final score: 0-0).
In January 2015, Drobný extended his contract, which was running out at the end of the season, to June 30, 2017 with a connection option in the youth sector. On the 25th matchday in the game against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim Drobný received his first dismissal in the Bundesliga . After interim coach Peter Knäbel took over on matchday 27, René Adler was given preference again after two games due to being sent off in the other games of the season, including the close relegation in the relegation against Karlsruher SC . In May 2016, HSV announced that Drobný would leave the club after the season was over. He played his last Bundesliga game for Hamburg on the 33rd matchday in a 0-1 home defeat against VfL Wolfsburg , as regular goalkeeper Adler was injured. Due to Adler's injury, Drobný could have been in goal on matchday 34 and last; However, he refrained from playing and explained this with "lack of tension " and the wish that his "buddy Tom Mickel " should play. He had also previously stated that HSV managers Dietmar Beiersdorfer and Bruno Labbadia had "no eggs" because of the separation after the end of the season, which for head coach Labbadia was a violation of the team code.
For the 2016/17 season , Drobný moved to " arch rivals " SV Werder Bremen , where he received a one-year contract with an option for another year. There, due to a sporting crisis, he unexpectedly received Felix Wiedwald's regular place after a few match days , but was injured in the meantime. He played 10 season games (3rd to 6th and 12th to 17th matchday). In January 2017 he received the red card on the 17th matchday at the home game against Borussia Dortmund (1: 2) after a foul against Marco Reus . He was suspended for three games and was not used again. In the 2017/18 season he was the clear number 2 behind his compatriot and national goalkeeper Jiří Pavlenka .
After ten games in one and a half years for Werder Bremen, Drobny got his clearance in January 2019 and moved to league rivals Fortuna Düsseldorf , for whom he was between the posts once in the cup and twice in the league , until the end of the season.
Career finale at home
In October 2019, the now 40-year-old goalkeeper returned to his homeland and joined his youth club, Dynamo Budweis . Drobný was immediately the new number 1 and ousted the previous regular goalkeeper Jindřich Staněk .
National team
Drobný played 16 times for the Czech U21 team . On September 10, 2008 he was under Petr Rada in the goalless draw in the World Cup qualifier against Northern Ireland in Belfast for the first time to the squad of the Czech national team . On February 11, 2009, the goalkeeper made his debut in the 0-0 win against Morocco in the senior national team . He drove as a substitute goalkeeper under Michal Bílek behind Petr Čech for the Euro 2012 to Poland and the Ukraine , but was not used. After he was part of the squad for the first time in the 1-0 win on October 15, 2013 in the World Cup qualifier against Bulgaria in Sofia , he was not nominated for a long time, also due to injury. On August 25, 2016 Drobny received from Karel Jarolím , who after the Euro 2016 in France on Pavel Vrba (successor to Michal Bilek) was followed, with his nomination for the friendly in Jungbunzlau against Armenia and for the World Cup qualifier in Prague his first Invitation for the national team since October 2013, but was not used. In September 2016 he was nominated for the World Cup qualifier in Hamburg against the then world champion Germany, but had to cancel due to an injury.
Ligových brankářů club
The 1-0 win of HSV on October 4, 2014 in the Bundesliga match against Borussia Dortmund was Drobný's one hundredth first division game without conceding a goal. The goalkeeper became a member of the ligových brankářů club , an association founded by the Czech sports magazine Gól , which includes Czech football goalkeepers who have played at least one hundred first division games without conceding a goal.
Private
Drobný is married to a Greek woman and has a son and a daughter.
