Antti Mikko Niemi (born May 31, 1972 in Oulu ) is a former Finnish football goalkeeper who was last under contract with Portsmouth FC , but was not used there.

Career

The goalkeeper's first professional station was HJK Helsinki . He was brought into the first team at HJK in 1990. In January 1996 it went on to FC Copenhagen in Denmark . In June 1997 he moved to the British Isles for the Glasgow Rangers for the first time . In 1999 it went on to Heart of Midlothian . In 2002 Niemi moved south to Southampton FC . From January 2006 on, Niemi guarded the goal of Fulham FC .

Niemi played 67 times for the Finnish national soccer team . In 2004 he was named Footballer of the Year in Finland . In September 2008 he ended his career due to a hand injury. Together with Satu Kunnas , long-time goalkeeper of the Finnish women's national team , Niemi was appointed ambassador for the 2009 European Championship in Finland.
