The Katowice Voivodeship ( Polish województwo katowickie ) was a Polish administrative unit from 1950 to 1998 , which in 1999 became part of today's Silesian Voivodeship as part of an administrative reform . The capital was the eponymous Katowice . In 1950 the śląsko – dąbrowskie ( Silesian - dombrowaer ) voivodeship was divided between Opole and Katowice (which was also joined by Częstochowa ). From March 7, 1953 to December 20, 1956, the voivodeship was named województwo stalinogrodzkie in honor of Josef Stalin . In 1975 the Katowice Voivodeship was reduced: the Częstochowa Voivodeship was spun off in the north and the Bielsko-Biała Voivodeship in the south .
