Thiago Rangel Cionek (born April 21, 1986 in Curitiba , Paraná , Brazil ) is a Polish football player .

origin

Cionek was born and raised in Curitiba . He is the descendant of Polish immigrants who emigrated from Poland to Brazil at the beginning of the 20th century . Therefore, since October 3, 2011, he has both Brazilian and Polish citizenship . He plays in the defense primarily as a central defender .

Career

In the club

Thiago Rangel Cionek began his career at the lower-class club Vila Hauer EC in his native Curitiba. From 2005 to 2006 he was part of the first team of Cuiabá EC . In July 2006 he moved to the Portuguese third division club and promoted GD Bragança . There he came to two missions and scored one goal. After the club's relegation in summer 2007, Cionek returned to Brazil and moved to the second division club Clube de Regatas Brasil . There he came in the 2007 season for his first appearance in professional football. After completing a three-week trial training session with the Polish first division club Jagiellonia Białystok from June 2008 , he signed a three-year contract there in July 2008 until the end of June 2011.

Cionek fought for a regular place straight away and won the trophy and the Supercup with the club in 2010 . In June 2010 he extended his contract by two years to the end of June 2013. In total, he came to 91 missions and scored three goals in the Ekstraklasa. At the end of August 2012, he moved to the Italian second division club Calcio Padova for the equivalent of around 400,000 euros , with whom he signed a three-year contract until the end of June 2015. There he immediately gained a regular place. In the summer of 2013 he switched to league rivals FC Modena on loan . After a season of strong performances, he was finally signed by FC Modena in July 2014. On January 11, 2016, Cionek was signed by the Italian first division club US Palermo . It was not until the 31st match day that he got his first appearance. Then he also played the last four games of the season over the full playing time.

In January 2018, Cionek moved to SPAL Ferrara .

In the national team

At the beginning of May 2014, Cionek was called up for the first time by national coach Adam Nawałka in the senior national team of Poland for the charity match in Hamburg against Germany on May 13, 2014. In this game he was in the starting line-up and made his international debut.

In qualifying for the European Football Championship in 2016 , he sat on the bench in all games, but was used in friendly matches and included in the EM squad . Once, in the third group game, he was used in the starting XI against Ukraine. In the two knockout games until they were eliminated in the quarter-finals, he was on the bench.

At the 2018 World Cup in Russia , Cionek was part of the Polish squad . He was only used in the first group game against Senegal ; while he faked the ball into his own goal. Poland lost the game 2-1.
