This article covers the Portuguese national soccer team at the 2018 World Cup . Portugal took part in the finals for the seventh time and as European champions for the first time.

qualification

The team qualified for the World Cup in Russia through the qualifying matches of the European football association UEFA .

Games

Cristiano Ronaldo, best Portuguese goalscorer in qualifying

European champions Portugal met in Group B against Switzerland , Hungary , the Faroe Islands , Latvia and Andorra . In the ten encounters that resulted, the Portuguese team had nine wins that they had not previously managed in ten games to qualify for the World Cup. Despite the defeat in the first game against Switzerland, which also won nine games, the Portuguese managed to qualify directly, as the last decisive game for the group victory against Switzerland, in which the Swiss would have been enough, was won 2-0 . Since Portugal had the better goal difference, the Portuguese passed the Swiss on the last match day. However, as the best runner-up in the group, Switzerland was also able to book the World Cup ticket via the playoffs of the runners-up against Northern Ireland.

In qualifying, national coach Fernando Santos initially relied on the players from the successful EM team from 2016 . 18 of the players used were also in the European Championship squad and 21 of the players were then also nominated for the FIFA Confederations Cup 2017 , which was held in mid-qualification . Only André Silva , who was not yet at the European Championship and had played his first international match in the first game after the European Championship, and goalkeeper Rui Patrício were used in all ten games. Captain Cristiano Ronaldo , Ricardo Quaresma and João Mário have made nine appearances . Seven players had only one appearance, including two European champions, Adrien Silva and Renato Sanches , who had four and six appearances at the EM.

The top scorer was Cristiano Ronaldo with 15 goals, who was the second top scorer in the European qualifying after the Poland Robert Lewandowski . André Silva scored nine goals as the fifth best European goalscorer. Five other players scored two or one goal. Portugal also benefited from an own goal by a Swiss.

The team's quarters were the “Saturn Training Center” of the “FK Saturn Ramenskoye ” in Kratowo ( Ramenskoye Rajon , Moscow Oblast ), southeast of Moscow , where the team could also train.

The preliminary roster was announced on May 14th. The official roster was announced on May 17th. Vitorino Antunes , João Cancelo , Éder , André Gomes , Rony Lopes , Luís Neto , Nani , Rúben Neves , Sérgio Oliveira , Paulinho , Rolando and Nélson Semedo were removed from the provisional squad. Record international player and goal scorer Cristiano Ronaldo is the first Portuguese to take part in a World Cup finals for the fourth time.

Venues and quarters (blue / italic) for the Portuguese

For the draw of the qualifying groups on December 1st, Portugal was assigned to Pot 1 and could therefore not be drawn into a group with world champions Germany, record world champions Brazil, runner-up world champions Argentina or host Russia. Portugal met in Group B on former world champion Spain , the Iran and Morocco . The Portuguese first met Spain, the Portuguese’s most frequent opponent, at a World Cup tournament: in 2010 they lost 1-0 in the round of 16 against the eventual world champions. With eight wins, 13 draws and 17 defeats, the balance will remain negative for a long time. Portugal also had bad World Cup experiences with Morocco: in 1986 they lost 3-1 in the preliminary round and thus missed the knockout round. There have not been any further games against the North Africans. The World Cup experience against Iran is good: Portugal won 2-0 in the preliminary round of the 2006 World Cup. There is also a game at the Brazil Independence Cup 1972, which was won 3-0.

Until then, the Portuguese had only been able to gain experience in the Moscow stadiums of the World Cup, Portugal had not yet played in the other two group venues.
