When the final round was drawn on December 6, 2013, Portugal was drawn into Group G with Germany headed by the group. Also drawn were Ghana and the USA . Germany was last opponent in the first group match of the European Championship finals on June 9, 2012, with Germany winning 1-0. At world championships, both met each other once, in the game for third place at the 2006 World Cup, which Germany won 3-1. The USA was last opposed on June 5, 2002 in the first group game of the 2002 World Cup, with the USA winning 3-2. Overall, the record was balanced with two wins, one draw and one defeat against the USA. Portugal had never played against Ghana before the World Cup.
Before the draw, Portugal's record scorer Cristiano Ronaldo expressed his wish not to face Germany. In the group stage of the finals, Portugal initially lost 4-0 to Germany. The central defender Pepe was sent off for assault. In addition, Hugo Almeida and Fábio Coentrão suffered thigh injuries without opposing influence and could no longer be used. Portugal got off to a very good start against the USA. Nani scored in the fifth minute . The game that later flattened was turned by two US goals. In the penultimate minute of stoppage time, Varela was able to equalize after Ronaldo's cross. In their last game against Ghana, Portugal won 2-1, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring his 50th international goal. Because of the worse goal difference, Portugal was only third in the group and eliminated.

Sports impact
As a result of the preliminary round, Portugal lost seven places in the FIFA world rankings , falling from fourth to 11th place. The fall out of the top 10 is less the cause of their own point loss (-42 points), but rather the result of the points gained by most of the teams that reached the knockout round.
