Ricardo Miguel Moreira da Costa [ ʁiˈkaɾðu ˈkɔʃtɐ ] (born May 16, 1981 in Vila Nova de Gaia , Portugal ) is a Portuguese football player . He plays the position of central defender .
Career
Costa comes from the youth of Boavista Porto and moved to local rivals FC Porto at the age of 18 . He made his professional debut for FC in 2002 against Boavista. He belonged to the Portuguese series champions during one of the most successful times in the club's history, when they won the UEFA Cup only in 2003 and the Champions League and then the World Cup the following year . In addition, in its six years in the first team, FC Porto was four times national champions and twice cup winners. Nevertheless, Costa did not manage to become a permanent regular. In his personally most successful 2004/05 season, he made 24 season appearances. After only being used eight times in 2006/07, he decided to move abroad.
He has been active for VfL Wolfsburg since the 2007/08 season . However, he tore a cruciate ligament in the first round of the cup before the start of the league . On matchday 13 he was able to celebrate his Bundesliga debut and played in almost all games from then until the end of the season (20 games, 2 goals). In his second year with the Wolves, the Portuguese was only used in the preliminary round and therefore wanted to leave the club again. After winning the German championship and the departure of coach Magath, he decided to switch to the Spanish first division club Real Saragossa . However, the change, which was already considered safe, did not materialize due to deviations from previous agreements in the contract. On January 28, 2010, Costa finally moved to Lille OSC . Half a year later he finally signed a contract with the Spanish first division club Valencia CF.
The contract was terminated in summer 2014. Costa then joined the Qatari club al-Sailiya , but returned to Europe after just six months and signed with PAOK Saloniki for a year and a half . In February 2016 he moved back to Spain for FC Granada .
On July 8, 2016, he moved to Switzerland for FC Luzern in the Super League, where he signed a contract with an option until the end of June 2018. In June 2017, his contract with FC Luzern was terminated prematurely.
National team
As a youth, Costa played for Portuguese youth national teams and was nominated several times for the U21 national team. He was also part of the team at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens . For the Portuguese senior team , he took part in the 2006 World Cup and the 2010 World Cup.
