Reverend Bizarre were a Finnish doom metal group.

Band history

The band was founded in Lohja in 1994 . After Albert Magus, Peter Vicar and Juippi finished their military service, Vicar had to move to Turku in the fall of 1997 . At the same time, Juippi's consumption of stimulants impaired his playing technique.

In the summer of 1998 Magus moved to Turku and continued Reverend Bizarre with Vicar. To complete their line-up, they recorded Earl of Void, who had recently been released from prison and had already made music with Magus. They played the demo recording Slice of Doom in three days (August 16, 17 and 23, 1999) and sent it to several record companies in the hope of a record deal.

Five albums were originally planned. On August 17, 2007, the group announced on MySpace their breakup after their last studio album So long Suckers . At the end of September 2007, however, she announced the recording and publication of several phonograms.

After the end of Reverend Bizarre, the band members focused on their other bands and projects. Albert Witchfinder has been running The Puritan since 2005, where he and two fellow musicians implement all the ideas that were still intended for Reverend Bizarre. Stylistically this band goes in the direction of depressive Doom Metal. With Armanenschaft and Azrael Rising he runs two other black metal- oriented projects (Reverend Bizarre had covered some pieces from the black metal area such as Burzum's Dunkelheit and Barathrum's Dark Sorceress (Autumn Siege) and originally wanted to cover Judas' covers before the dissolution Iscariot and Sigh ). He has also been with Spiritus Mortis , the first doom metal band from Finland ever, since 2009 , which musically goes in the direction of the classic reverend bizarre sound. Opium Warlords, on the other hand, is a solo project in which Albert Witchfinder is responsible for all instruments and the vocals and in which he plays slow drone doom with little vocals and almost drum-less sound patterns. At Orne he plays again with Peter Vicar and Earl of Void, even if Albert Witchfinder, who took over the vocals for the first album and who will probably also contribute to the second album, does not see himself as a permanent member of the band. The group was originally founded in 1997 by Peter Vicar as a side project. Stylistically, Orne follow the paths of the occult , playful 1970s rock with Hammond organ and flute , which despite the joint participation of all three former Reverend Bizarre members has little to do with the music of Reverend Bizarre. Peter Vicar started the band Lord Vicar in 2007, in which Christian Lindersson, the first singer of the Swedish doom metal band Count Raven , who was also active with Saint Vitus , is involved.

Music style and lyrics

Reverend Bizarre saw themselves in the tradition of bands like Saint Vitus , Pentagram , Witchfinder General , Trouble and The Obsessed . The “dramatic” baritone singing is reminiscent of later works by Saint Vitus, combined with fuzz guitar sound, “pounding” drums and long “tragic” pieces, her debut album, according to Travis of the webzine Diabolical Conquest, is one of the “purest expressions in modern traditional Doom Metal ”. In terms of content, Reverend Bizarre dealt with well-tried topics, including biblical (with“ malicious Christian connotations ”) and historical fragments; according to Travis, after the debut album they became "presumptively ironic, retro and self-conscious".
