Raul José Trindade Meireles (born March 17, 1983 in Porto ), called Raul Meireles , is a former Portuguese football player who was under contract with Fenerbahçe Istanbul until 2016 .
Career
In the club
In August 2010, Meireles moved from FC Porto to Liverpool for a transfer fee of 14 million euros , where he received a four-year contract. He had previously played for Boavista Porto and Desportivo Aves . After a strong first season in Liverpool, he was named PFA Fans' Player of the Year .
On August 31, 2011, Meireles moved to Chelsea for about 13.5 million euros . Meireles also showed strong performances at Chelsea, scoring six goals in 48 games for the Blues. Meireles also won the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea, but was unable to play in the final due to a yellow card suspension.
Before the summer transfer deadline, Meireles moved to Turkey to Fenerbahçe Istanbul , where he signed a four-year contract. This transfer cost the club around ten million euros. In December 2012, Meireles was suspended for eleven games after he was accused of spat at the referee in the city derby against Galatasaray Istanbul after he was sent off. The suspension was later reduced to four games, as it was found that Meireles had not spat at the referee, but insulted.
After he had not received another contract extension after his contract with Fenerbahçe, Meireles negotiated with some clubs. However, since he could not come to an agreement with any of the interested parties during the summer transfer period, he finally ended his career in 2016.
In the national team
In 2008 he was appointed to the Portuguese squad at the European Championship . In their debut against Turkey , he scored the decisive 2-0 with his first international goal. At the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Meireles was used in all four Portuguese games. In the 7-0 win against North Korea in the second group game, he scored the opening goal. He also played for Portugal in all five games at the European Championships in Poland and Ukraine .
