Silvestre Manuel Gonçalves Varela (born February 2, 1985 in Almada ) is a Portuguese football player .
Private
His brother Carlos is also a professional soccer player and is active in Almada. In addition to the Portuguese, Silvestre Varela is also a citizen of the African Republic of Cape Verde .
Player career
Silvestre Varela comes from the youth of the Portuguese top club Sporting Lisbon . In the 2004/05 season he was loaned to the lower class club Casa Pia AC . After he returned to Sporting for half a year, Varela moved on loan for 18 months to first division rivals Vitória Setúbal . There he was able to earn a regular position and assert himself in Portugal. He has been playing for FC Porto since 2009. On December 7, 2013 Varela completed his 100th league game for FC Porto.
For the 2007/08 season he was loaned to the Spanish first division club Recreativo Huelva , but returned to Sporting after the season. He was Portugal's U-21 international.
International
On March 3, 2010 Varela was used for the first time in the Portuguese national team. He was substituted on in the second half of the friendly against China PR in Coimbra . On March 26, 2011, he scored his first goal for Portugal in a 1-1 draw against Chile in Leiria .
Varela was appointed to the squad for the 2012 European Championship by Portugal's national coach Paulo Bento and played for ten minutes in the first group game against Germany on June 9, 2012, where he missed the Portuguese’s last great scoring chance against Manuel Neuer just before the final whistle . In the second group game against Denmark he was substituted on as a Joker shortly before the end and scored four minutes later in the 88th minute for the 3-2 winner for Portugal.
