André Gomes Magalhães Almeida (born September 10, 1990 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese football player who is currently playing for Benfica Lisbon in the Primeira Liga .

Football career

The Almeida, which is unusually tall for a Portuguese at 1.86 m, but still light at 75 kg, already attracted attention in the youth and junior sector. So he was able to receive football training at Portuguese top clubs at an early age and made it from the U-19 to the U-20 to the U-21 national team of the Portuguese Football Association . In 2010 he played 16 games in the U-21s.

Benfica signed him on July 1, 2011 to loan him immediately to União Leiria ; in December, however, he was called back to the Estádio da Luz in his hometown. In the Champions League he made four appearances on one substitution, in the Primeira Liga he made five appearances on four substitutions. Two full-time appearances in games for the Taça de Portugal , the Portuguese Football Cup, are likely to have been particularly important for him : Benfica later won the cup. In the 2012/13 season he played at the beginning of the 2nd team of Benfica in the Liga de Honra , the second highest division in the country. After the departure of the Spaniard Javi García and the Belgian Axel Witsel at the end of the summer changeover period, however, he got new assignments in the first, in which older, experienced Brazilians outnumber locals: he increased his salary and market value considerably through good performance , especially in the games against Celtic Glasgow .

For his style of play and his sixth yellow card in the game at Sporting , the athlete, who lives in the district town of Loures, north of Lisbon, was awarded on 5th / 8th May 2012 penalized: 100 € flowed to the association from the player (the clubs were each hit with 2500 €).

National team

On October 11, 2013 Almeida made his debut in a World Cup qualifier against Israel under national coach Paulo Bento in the senior national team of Portugal.
