Pauleta [ pauˈletɐ ] (born  April 28, 1973 in Ponta Delgada , Azores ; actually Pedro Miguel Carreiro Resendes ) is a former Portuguese football player . He is the first Portuguese international professional soccer player who has never played in the Portuguese Primeira Liga .

Career

society

The clubs with professional teams became aware of Pauleta's talent early on. He started his early career with some Portuguese third and fourth division clubs; he played for CD Santa Clara , CD Operário , Sport Clube Angrense and CD União Micaelense , among others , before he was signed by the then second division club GD Estoril Praia . There he developed into a regular player, was able to score 19 goals in league games and was top scorer in the Liga de Honra . Thanks to this performance, the first Spanish scouts had the young striker on their notes. So it happened that after only one year at Estoril he left the club and dared to move abroad. His first stop in Spain was the UD Salamanca club from the Segunda División . There, too, he was able to convince quickly with his goals and performances. With 19 goals in his first season with the Spaniards, he had a significant share in the promotion to the Primera División . After working for UDS for two years , the first top club contacted Pauleta. In the summer of 1998 he left Salamanca and was re-introduced to Deportivo La Coruña . Despite regular playing time and goals, he could never really gain a foothold at Deportivo. The club then sold the player to Girondins Bordeaux for around 9 million euros . In his last season 1999/00 for La Coruña he was able to celebrate the championship with the Galicians .

In September 2000 he put on the Bordeaux jersey for the first time. On his debut, he scored a hat trick in a 5-0 away win over FC Nantes . In his second year he was the top scorer in Ligue 1 and was voted best player in France in 2001 and 2002 . In the summer of 2003, Paris Saint-Germain secured the services of the thoroughbred striker. In the first season Pauleta led the capital club to its first title win in six years. In the final of the Coupe de France , Pauleta scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win over LB Châteauroux . In the same year PSG became runner-up. Pauleta contributed 18 goals to this success. In 2006 he scored his 100th competitive goal for Paris and made himself immortal for its fans.

At the end of the 2007/08 season he played his last game for his longtime club PSG . In his farewell game in front of a home crowd on May 10, 2008 against AS Saint-Étienne (1: 1), he was said goodbye with numerous banners (two of which can be seen in the photo on the right), loud chants and standing ovations.

After retiring, he joined Sao Roque in 2008, an amateur club in the Azores.

National team

Pauleta made his debut for the Portuguese national soccer team on August 20, 1997 against Armenia . He scored his first two goals in his sixth international match in March 1999 against Azerbaijan (7-0). He played with the national team at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea , the 2004 European Football Championship in Portugal and the 2006 World Cup in Germany. At the 2004 European Championships he was runner-up with Portugal. After 88 international matches and 47 goals, he ended his national team career after the 2006 World Cup.

As a national player, Pauleta overtook the then record scorer Eusébio with his 42nd international goal on October 12, 2005 . On March 5, 2014, he was replaced as record holder by Cristiano Ronaldo .
