Robert Mercier , actually Robert Furois (born October 14, 1909 in Paris , † September 15, 1958 ), was a French football player .

Club career

The center forward began his career in the 1920s at Club Français Paris ; With this traditional club Robert Mercier won the cup in 1931 and was also a national player in the same year. When a professional league was introduced in France in 1932 , he was there with Club Français, and it was quite successful: at the end of the first season of Division 1 , Mercier won the top scorer's crown together with Walter Kaiser from Stade Rennais UC , in a maximum of 18 games Had scored 15 hits. His club, however, rose due to a downsizing of the league to the second division and withdrew completely from paid football in 1934.

Mercier then moved to local rivals Racing Paris ; in the 1935/36 season he was involved in winning the doublé , was with the team French champions (18 point games and eight hits) and again cup winner , although he was not used in the final. In the following season he was also part of the team, even made 26 league games, but only scored one goal. A complicated broken leg that he suffered in a friendly with Racing Paris ended his career abruptly. In this respect, it remains unclear whether he was still used in the 1937/38 season, when, according to the website of the French association, he was under contract with Racing Arras . The same applies to his subsequent employment at Stade Rennais UC and FC Dieppe (as a coach ).

National player

Between May 1931 and November 1935 Robert Mercier played seven full international matches for France , scoring three goals, two of them on his debut against England . For the World Cup in Italy in 1934 , however, he was not taken into account in France's squad because the competition in his attacking position with Jean Nicolas and Roger Courtois was very strong.
