The Division 1 1954-55 was the 17th staging of the professional French football league. Champion became Stade Reims , which won its third title since 1949 .
The first game day was August 22, 1954, the last game day was May 22, 1955. There was no “winter break”; there were also games on the Christmas and New Year weekends.
societies
Eligible were the clubs that had finished the previous season no worse than 15th place, and the three promoted teams from the second division . Thus, the following teams played for the championship title this season:
- three clubs from the far north (defending champions OSC Lille , CO Roubaix-Tourcoing , Racing Lens ),
- three from Île-de-France and Champagne (the two newcomers Racing Paris and AS Troyes-Savinienne and Stade Reims ),
- four from the northeast ( FC Sochaux , FC Nancy , FC Metz , Racing Strasbourg ),
- two from the southwest ( Girondins Bordeaux , Toulouse FC ),
- six from the southeast ( Olympique Marseille , OGC Nice , Olympique Nîmes , AS Saint-Étienne , promoted Olympique Lyon , AS Monaco ).
Season course
The season began with an exclamation mark when 47 goals were scored in the nine games on the first match day, more than since 1945. At the top of the table, a duel between Reims and Toulouse developed in the first half of the season, which remained completely open until the end of the year; the symbolic autumn championship went to the Rémois only because of the better goal quotient . Then the team around Raymond Kopa pulled away, which even a 5-0 defeat in Bordeaux at the beginning of May did not change, and not only qualified again for the Coupe Latine , but also for the first ever European Cup . Behind this duo, the surprise team from Lens, the strong Strasbourg team around their Austrian striker Ernst Stojaspal and FC Sochaux occupied the next places in the final table , albeit with a considerable gap.
In the relegation zone it was much closer, where once again the goal quotient decided who had to accompany Roubaix-Tourcoing, still French champion in 1947 , into the second division. This lot struck the team from Troyes - and defending champion Lille, a few weeks earlier still beaming cup winners , only narrowly escaped this fate after an unparalleled roller coaster ride, but had to play playoffs against Stade Rennes UC , the third-placed division 2 , in which the OSC played 6: 1 and 1: 0 claimed. Even Troyes was spared relegation after the end of the season, because the French federation denied the traditional, but unsound, traditional club Red Star Olympique from Saint-Ouen the athletic promotion. In the following season there was only one newcomer with the UA Sedan-Torcy's “worker footballers” .
