Division 1 1944/45

The Division 1 1945-46 was the eighth staging of the professional French football league and also the first official championship after six years, war-related interruption. The champion was OSC Lille , whose predecessor club Olympique Lille had already won the title in 1933 .

The first day of play was August 26, 1945. There was no official break over the turn of the year; However, an extreme winter ensured that the league could not play their last matches until June 16, 1946.

Competent for the league championship Association Board (Groupement des Clubs autorisés) had determined that at this season, the clubs, the last pre-war season had no worse completed as in 14th place, were just as eligible as the two clubs that at the time the rise authorization from of the second division . Since the first division was also increased to 18 teams and there was another free place due to the interim merger of Olympique Lille with its local rival SC Fives , the association determined three clubs "in view of their performance during the war and occupation" as a supplement to the Circle. None of these "successors" had been represented in Division 1 up to then .

This season the following teams played for the championship title:

(a)CORT was the successor to the Excelsior AC Roubaix , which had merged with Racing Roubaix and US Tourcoing in 1945 .

Season course

While the dominant pre-war clubs (Paris, Marseille, Sète) did not get beyond the middle of the table throughout the season or even, like Sochaux, played against relegation from the start, Saint-Étienne held first place until the turn of the year. The three northern clubs and the newcomers from Reims and Rennes were able to keep the deficit within limits, and when the championship leaders produced an absolutely negative run at the beginning of the second half of the season - three months without a single win - Lille overtook them. But Saint-Étienne recovered, at times even once again ranked first - until May 1, 1946, when the two teams met, in which the northern French hosts Saint-Étienne taught a real lesson 8-0 and each other then no longer let it be ousted by the top. After Lille OSC had already won the cup final at the end of May , they became the third club in France to also win the doublé . He also had a black day this season when part of a grandstand roof collapsed during the derby against Lens, causing 58 spectators to suffer mostly serious injuries.

At the bottom of the table, FC Sochaux was relegated early on, and Metz should actually have accompanied him to the second division. However, this lot did not hit Lorraine , nor did Le Havre AC in 16th place, but Lyon OU in 15th place. The literature used is not clear on this, but the reason for this is said to have been that the association gave clubs from Metz, Strasbourg and Le Havre - these cities were among the “particularly afflicted by the war” (ville meurtrie par la guerre)  - for them Season had given a "no relegation guarantee". For the following season, Division 1 was increased to 20 participants; The newcomers FC Nancy , SO Montpellier , Stade Français Paris and Toulouse FC benefited from this .
