Division 1 1951/52

The Division 1 1952/53 was the 15th staging of the professional French football league. Champion became Stade Reims , which won its second title after 1949 .

The first game day was August 24, 1952, the last game day was May 24, 1953. There was no “winter break”.

societies

Eligible to participate were the clubs that had finished the previous season no worse than 16th, and the two promoted teams from the second division . Thus, the following teams played for the championship title this season:

Season course

Master Reims almost achieved a start-to-finish victory; the team, which managed to get by with 14 players during 38 games and only suffered their first home defeat on December 14, 1952, ensured a season that "was lacking by the end of the first half of the season at the latest". None of the competitors, not even the strong home Nîmes (14 wins, 3 draws), showed the consistency that would have been necessary to prevent the team with the best attack and the best defense from becoming champions. Reims also qualified for the Coupe Latine , which she even managed to win this year. A few days after the final there, however, the red and whites lost their striker Francis Méano in a tragic accident.

The relegation decision, however, was wafer-thin and dramatic until the end; the 11th and 17th were only separated by two points in the final table, and Racing Paris was left behind because the “Penguins” led 1-0 at home against Nancy until a few minutes before the final whistle on the last match day, but then still had to accept two goals. With Racing, the league lost another of its founding members ; From 1932 onwards, only Marseille, Sète, Lille and Roubaix-Tourcoing were represented after this season, the latter two being strictly speaking no longer the clubs of 1932 due to their merger history. Rennes also had to relegate; the Bretons lost to second division Racing Strasbourg in the eliminations 1: 3 and 0: 4. For the following season , Toulouse FC and - for the first time in their club's history - AS Monaco rose to Division 1 .
