Henri Fontaine (born March 17, 1925 in Barbentane , † October 15, 2018 in Avignon ) was a French football player and coach .

Career

Fontaine played from 1935 on for a local club from his hometown Barbentane. In 1943, the 175 centimeter tall striker moved to ÉF Marseille-Provence at this stage of the war instead of taking part in the national championship instead of club teams. On November 28, 1943 he made his debut in the then unofficial first division and at the same time his first goal for this; later in the 1943/44 season, however, he moved to league rivals ÉF Montpellier-Languedoc . When the clubs were re-admitted in 1944, he belonged to the squad of the associated club SO Montpellier and competed for this in the still unofficial first division.

In 1945 Fontaine signed with Olympique Marseille and at the same time saw the resumption of regular play, which he could henceforth play in the official top division. At a time when substitutions and substitutions were not yet possible, he was only intended as a substitute player and therefore had to wait until February 24, 1946 for his official first division debut; in the 2: 3 defeat against FC Rouen he was successful with one goal. In autumn 1946 he became a regular player, but lost this position again in 1947. In the course of the 1947/48 season he did not get beyond one mission, but still belonged to the team that won the French championship that year. He was then called up again occasionally, but did not make a permanent return to the first team. In 1949 he turned his back on Marseille, for which he did not achieve great success as a goalscorer with a maximum of five goals this season, after four years.

At the same time he signed with league rivals FC Sète , where he became a regular player. In addition, he gained importance as a goalscorer when, at the end of the 1949/50 season, he took fifth place in the list of goalscorers with 18 goals. The team moved mostly in the lower regions of the table and Fontaine did not show himself as a Torgarant, but followed the 18 goals from the first year between 6 and 14 depending on the season. His seven successes were no longer enough at the end of the 1953/54 season to keep Sète in the top class.

Although the attacker decided to move to the second division after relegation in 1954, instead of staying in Sète, he switched to the second division Red Star Paris . Despite the fact that he was promoted in sport, he was unable to return to the top league in 1955 due to allegations of manipulation. 1956 Fontaine Paris turned his back after two years as a regular player and signed with his also second-rate former club SO Montpellier. His twelve goals helped the team to secure a place in midfield during the season 1956/57. Then the striker left a club again after a short time to find his third stop in the second division with FC Limoges . He contributed seven hits and achieved promotion with the team in 1958. However, he decided against a return to the first division and ended his professional career at 33 after 183 first division games with 71 goals and 110 second division games with 38 goals. He went to a lower class club from Pont-Saint-Esprit , for which he was active as a player -coach until 1963 .
