The Division 1 1949-50 was the twelfth hosting of the professional French football league. The Girondins Bordeaux became champions for the first time in their club history .
The first game day was August 21, 1949, the last game day was May 21, 1950. There was no “winter break”; There were also games on Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
societies
The clubs that had finished the previous season no worse than 17th place were eligible to participate - SR Colmar had voluntarily returned to amateur football, from which the penultimate in the first division, Strasbourg, benefited - as well as the two direct promoters from the second division . Thus, the following teams played for the championship title this season:
- three clubs from the far north ( CO Roubaix-Tourcoing , OSC Lille , promoted Racing Lens ),
- three from Paris and Champagne ( Racing Paris , Stade Français-Red Star , defending champion Stade Reims ),
- one from Brittany ( Stade Rennes UC ),
- four from the northeast ( FC Sochaux , FC Nancy , Racing Strasbourg , FC Metz ),
- two from the southwest ( Toulouse FC , promoted Girondins Bordeaux ),
- five from the southeast ( AS Saint-Étienne , SO Montpellier , FC Sète , Olympique Marseille , OGC Nice ).
Season course
Lille had a real lightning start: after seven games, the OSC led the table with 14: 0 points and had already scored 27 goals before losing to their “feared opponent” Racing Paris. The northern French also won the unofficial autumn championship, followed by Toulouse, newly promoted Bordeaux and defending champion Reims. Then Reims and even more Lille left the Constance so that the other two opponents could overtake. Around 7,000 supporters from Bordeaux traveled to their direct clash at the end of April 1950 - an unprecedented enthusiasm for football in south-west France, which is more towards rugby - and then celebrated the 2-1 win away and the Girondins taking over the top of the table. From this position Bordeaux could not be ousted, and after 34 matchdays the team with the best attack and the best defense was champions by a large margin, as well as the first promoted team in the history of Division 1 to achieve such a "march to the title" was. The Girondins then crowned their season with a very respectable appearance in the Coupe Latine .
At the bottom of the table, Montpellier and especially Metz, the two weakest defensive teams were beaten early and had to vacate their place in favor of the second division promoted Olympique Nîmes and Le Havre AC for the following season .
