René Persillon

René Persillon (born June 16, 1919 in Pessac ) is a former French football player .

Club career

The 186 centimeter tall Persillon ran from 1935 on for the amateur club Stade Pessac from his hometown; he initially took over the role of goalkeeper before moving to the offensive, where he played primarily on the right wing . In 1942 he moved to Girondins Bordeaux and took part with the club in the only unofficial hosting of the first division due to the war. In 1943, the team reached the national cup final , which despite the situation was about an official title. In the final, Persillon scored the 2-2 goal just before the end and saved his team against Olympique Marseille in a replay, which was lost 4-0.

When regular play was resumed in 1945, the attacker made his official debut in the French top division; he was a regular player and scored ten goals in his first season and thirteen goals in his second season, making his most successful seasons as a goalscorer. Despite his goalscoring successes, he could not save Bordeaux from being relegated to the second division in 1947. In 1949 the team managed to return to the first division and won the championship a year later as a promoted team; for Persillon, who did not get more than 20 appearances in 34 games in the championship season, this was the only national title win.

Even if another championship did not come about in the following years, Bordeaux established itself as the top team and was again in the cup final in 1952; by a 3: 5 against OGC Nice Persillon failed again, which he missed his last chance to win the competition. In the league, the professional was used less and less at a time when substitutions and substitutions were not yet possible and largely ousted from the team in the course of the 1953/54 season. At the end of the season, the then 35-year-old decided to end his career after 157 first division games with 35 goals and 63 second division games with 13 goals.

National team

Persillon never played a game for the senior team, but he played several times for the French Olympic team. The right winger was considered by the national association for the 1948 Olympic football tournament and entered the Olympic turf for the first time on July 31, 1948 against India; the match ended 2-1, with Persillon scoring one goal. After the round of 16, he was also called up in the quarter-finals, but was eliminated. Four years later he was also a member of the squad for the 1952 Olympic football tournament ; there he only played a preliminary round game against Poland, which brought the direct elimination with it. This ended his career in the Olympic selection after three games with one goal.
