Spindle

The spindle was an English thread measure. The size varied depending on the type of yarn and country.

The reel circumference or the length of the thread ( thread ) was set at 1.5 yards or 54 inches . The Hank or Strehn had 7 leas (containers) with 80 threads (reel threads) each. Leas was 120 yards, or after the strut, the hank, 840 yards.

  • Cotton yarn
    • 1 spindle or spyndle = 18 hanks = 15,120 yards = 13,825.728 meters
    • 1 hank = 7 lea = 560 threads = 840 yards = 768.096 meters
    • 1 lea = 80 threads = 120 yards = 109.728 meters
    • 1 thread = 1.5 yards = 54 inches = 1.3716 meters
  • Wool yarn
    • 1 spindle = 4 hank / strut = 14400 yards = 13167.36 meters
    • 1 Hank / Strehn = 3600 yards = 3291.84 meters
  • 1 Irish spindle (linen yarn, hemp yarn) = 4 hank = 14400 yards = 13167.36 meters
    • 1 hank = 3600 yards = 3291.84 meters
  • 1 bulkhead . Spindle (wool yarn) = 38 Lea = 11400 Yard = 10424.16 meters
    • 1 lea = 300 yards = 274.32 meters
  • England 1 spindle = 4 hanks = 48 lea = 5760 fathoms = 7900.416 meters
    • 1 hank = 12 leas = 1440 fathoms = 1975.104 meters
    • 1 cut or lea = 120 threads = 164.592 meters
    • 1 thread = 1.5 yards = 1.3716 meters
