René Gallice (born April 13, 1919 in Forcalquier ; † May 25, 1999 in Bordeaux ) was a French football player who spent the major part of his career at Girondins Bordeaux and ran up once for the French national team.

Club career

The 174 centimeter tall midfielder Gallice, who was occasionally called up as a defender , lived as a youth in Marseille and played from 1936 on for the reserve team of the first division club Olympique Marseille . In this way he made the leap into the first team, for which he played a game in the top national division for the first time on October 17, 1937 in a 3-3 draw against Racing Paris at the age of 18. From then on, the coach used him a few more times, even if he could not establish himself permanently at a time when substitutions and substitutions were not yet possible. His club made it to the national cup final in 1938 , which was won 2-1 against FC Metz without his involvement .

After seven first division games for Marseille, he signed with second division Girondins Bordeaux in 1938, in whose jersey he was on the pitch for the rest of his professional career. At Bordeaux, he immediately became a regular player, but in 1939 he had to experience the beginning of the Second World War and the associated interruption of the game. He could not take part in the unofficially continued football, as he was drafted into the army as a soldier at the age of 20 and continued to take part in the war after the occupation of France alongside the Forces françaises libres . He stayed at the front until 1944 and another year went by before he was back in the squad of his club from Bordeaux in 1945, which was allowed to compete in the first division after the reopening of regular play in 1945.

Despite his six-year absence and the fact that he had to prove himself a league higher, Gallice immediately rejoined the first team in the Southwest French. With the team he fought against relegation, which could no longer be thwarted in 1947. The otherwise more defensive-oriented player made a notable contribution in the 1948/49 season with ten goals and at the end of the season managed to return to the French elite class with the team. There he was one of the top performers of a team that won the national championship in 1950 as a promoted team. In the following years, the club was able to maintain its position among the best in the country, which led to the national cup final in 1952. While Gallice was able to win the title in 1938 without participation, this time he went to the final and failed due to a possible success with a 3: 5 against OGC Nice . Although he was well over 30 years old, he was able to maintain his position within the team in the early 1950s and was seeded until he was increasingly ousted from the first team in the course of the 1954/55 season. Accordingly, he was not on the field at the national cup final in 1955 and experienced a 2-5 defeat of his teammates against OSC Lille , which destroyed his hope for another title. In the same year he ended his professional career at the age of 36 after 250 first division games with 16 goals and 107 second division games with 15 goals. He then worked from 1955 to 1958 as a coach at an amateur club from Gironde-sur-Dropt and was also used as a player for this at times.

National team

Gallice was 32 years old when he made his debut in a 2-2 draw against Northern Ireland on May 12, 1951 in the shirt of the French national team. The friendly game, in which he could not score a goal himself, was also the only game he was allowed to play for his country.

Next life

Together with his teammate Jean Swiatek , he ran a sportswear shop in downtown Bordeaux from 1955 to 1958. He remained loyal to the city, even though he lived in Spain for a while as a pensioner . His sons Jean Gallice (* 1949) and André Gallice (* 1950) also took up the profession of football player, with Jean succeeding his father in the national team.
