Forcalquier is a French municipality with 5018 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence in the region Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . It is the sub-prefecture of the Arrondissement Forcalquier and the main town (French: bureau centralisateur ) of the canton Forcalquier . Gérard Avril has been mayor since 2017. His predecessor Christophe Castaner had held this position since 2001 and became French Interior Minister in 2018.

Forcalquier is located between the Montagne de Lure and the Luberon . The municipality is part of the Luberon Regional Nature Park .

In the Middle Ages Forcalquier was the capital of the county of Forcalquier .
