history

In the Lurs area, human traces can be traced back to the Paleolithic and Copper Age . Two Neolithic settlements were found during excavations , and a Gallo-Roman necropolis was discovered later .

The first written mention of the place comes from the 9th century. At least since that time it belonged to the bishops of Sisteron , which is why the inhabitants did not pay taxes to the counts of Provence and their successors, the kings of France, until the French Revolution .

The 10th century castle was captured three times during the Wars of Religion in the 16th century. In the course of the revolution, Lurs became the capital of the canton of Lurs for about ten years , but was annexed to the canton of Forcalquier in 1801 and finally to the canton of Peyruis in 1802 .

After the coup of Napoleon III. Twenty-two residents were charged against the Second Republic , which had provoked an armed uprising in the southern Alps in defense of the constitution , and the majority of them were deported to Algeria .

In 1863 Lurs already had a primary school for boys, and in 1877 at the latest for girls too. Wine was grown in the municipality until the middle of the 20th century . On August 20, 1944, Lurs was liberated from the German occupiers "in passing" by the 143rd Infantry Regiment of the US troops .
