Dauphin is a French municipality with 831 inhabitants (1 January 2017) in the department of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence in the region Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .
geography
The municipality of Dauphin in the northeast of the Luberon is located at the mouth of the Laye river in the Largue , about 60 kilometers northeast of Aix-en-Provence . The municipality is part of the Luberon Regional Nature Park .
history
The region around Dauphin was already settled in Roman times. The place was on the edge of the Via Domitia , a Roman road that connected Italy with Spain. A necropolis with 1500 Gallo-Roman graves was found near the village .
Dauphin is first mentioned in 1125 as castrum delphinum . In the late Middle Ages, the place experienced a boom as the seat of the Counts of Provence.

Attractions
Old town
The picturesque old town made of light limestone lies on a wooded hill and resembles a fortress. It dates from the 15th century. In the center of the village is one of the typical fortified farms from the 15th century.
lock
A tower, the main building (built at the end of the 16th century) and a portal have been preserved from the castle of the Counts of Provence.
St. Martin Church
The church of St. Martin dates from the 12th and 16th centuries and was built on the former castle chapel. It has a remarkable cross vault, a beautiful tiled stove and a church tower with green sheds.
economy
The main economic sectors of the place are tourism and agriculture. In the region mainly olive trees are grown and the olives are processed. The region is known for its olive oil.

Dauphin is not far from the A45 .
