Aubignosc ( Provençal : Aubinhòsc ) is a southeastern French mountain village with 592 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence in the region Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .

Aubignosc is located in the French Alps on the orographic right bank of the Durance , 104 kilometers northeast of Marseille and 22 kilometers northwest of Digne-les-Bains , the seat of the prefecture of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department. The neighboring communities of Aubignosc are Peipin in the north, Salignac in the northeast, Volonne in the southeast and Châteauneuf-Val-Saint-Donat in the south. history

The archaeologist André Müller directed the excavations , which were carried out from 1987 to 1989 before the construction of the A 51 autoroute in the lieu-dit Ponchonière. A prehistoric site from the Middle and Neolithic was discovered, which has an area of ​​35,000 square meters.

The archaeological digs are all in the Durance valley, where the course of the Via Domitia is believed to be. In 1988, some Tegulæ from the Gallo-Roman period (52 BC to 486 AD) were found about 500 meters southwest of the hamlet of Les Rouvières . In 1962 a grave from Gallo-Roman times was found in the town center during road construction work. In the lieu'dit Les Présidentes, northeast of Ponchonière, remains of buildings have been found that were inhabited until the end of the 3rd century. Another building was found during an excavation in 1993 and 1994.

Attractions

In the church there is a painting from the 18th century, which is listed as a Monument Historique .
