Valernes is a French commune of 250 people (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence in the region Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . It belongs to the canton of Seyne in the Arrondissement of Forcalquier . The residents call themselves the Valernes and Valernois .

The village center is at 600  m . In the west, the Durance forms the municipal boundary . Its tributary Sasse crosses the municipal marker. The neighboring municipalities are Nibles and Châteaufort in the northeast, Saint-Geniez and Entrepierres in the southeast, Sisteron in the southwest, Le Poët in the west and Vaumeilh in the northwest.
