Riez ( Occitan Ries ) is a French municipality with 1856 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence in the region Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur ; it belongs to the Arrondissement Forcalquier and the Canton of Riez .
geography
The Saint-Maxime hill dominates three valleys from which the Colostre (which flows into the Verdon at Saint-Martin-de-Brômes ) and Auvestre flow together here. Riez is at the crossroads of two historic roads that connect the Alps (via Digne-les-Bains ) and the Durance valley (via Valensole ) with the upper Var and Aix-en-Provence . The municipality is located in the Verdon Regional Nature Park .
history
The city's name comes from the Reii , a Gallic people who occupied the hill of Saint-Maxime before the arrival of the Romans. They founded a colonia here , the Colonia Julia Augusta Apollinarium Reiorum . Her Gallic name was Alaebaece. The city then became one of the 13 cities of the Narbonensis and an important regional center. From the 5th century until 1790 Riez was a bishopric (see list of the bishops of Riez ). A council took place here in 439 under Hilary of Arles . The bishopric and the convenient location allowed the place to maintain its importance beyond the Middle Ages.
Population development
from 1968 only residents with primary residence
