Banon is a French commune with 970 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region . It belongs to the Haute-Provence Pays de Banon community association .

geography

The village is located southeast of Mont Ventoux and south of Montagne de Lure on a hill on the eastern edge of the valley of the Riaille . The river Coulon , into which the Riaille flows about nine kilometers to the south, rises further east in the municipality . The village is made up of grain and lavender fields.

Digne-les-Bains with the seat of the prefecture is located about 65 km east, 25 km north-west of Forcalquier 25 km south-east.

Banon is known for its goat cheese of the same name . It is the only cheese with the AOC protective seal from the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.
