Volonne is a French commune with 1,650 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence in the region Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . It belongs to the canton of Château-Arnoux-Saint-Auban in the Arrondissement of Digne-les-Bains .

The place is on the Durance at an altitude of approx. 460  m above sea level.

history

The name of the city appears for the first time in documents in 1030. In the Middle Ages , the Abbey of Chardavon (now in the parish of Saint-Geniez) owned a church in Volonne, perhaps the Church of St. Martin. The place was conquered, looted and burned down during the Wars of Religion. In 1885 the community was hit by a cholera epidemic, and twelve children died.

The first suspension bridge was privately built in 1846 and had a span of 99 m and a width of 3.9 m. Tolls were levied until 1857. The bridge was used without major modifications until 1928 (with major repairs in 1857, 1885, 1886, 1898 and 1918). The bridge was replaced and burned down by the Resistance in 1944 . In 1949 a third bridge was built with a length of 102 m and a width of 4.4 m, this bridge was replaced by a cable-stayed bridge in 2006 .
