L'Escale is a French commune with 1,389 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence in the region Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Digne-les-Bains and the Canton of Volonne .

The place is about 15 kilometers southeast of Sisteron on the left bank of the Durance . Neighboring municipalities to L'Escale are:

The Durance runs along the western boundary of the municipality and is dammed up by a weir system ( Barrage de L'Escale ) to generate electricity. In the extreme southwest of the municipality, the Bléone river flows into the Durance from the left.

Transport links

L'Escale is mainly accessed through Route nationale 85 (Route Napoléon). The A51 motorway along the Durance runs in the neighboring municipality of Château-Arnoux-Saint-Aubin. The nearest airport, Aerodrome de Château-Arnoux-Saint-Aubin, is also located here .
