Louis-Henri de Brancas de Forcalquier , called Le Marquis de Brancas (born January 19, 1672 in Pernes-les-Fontaines , † August 9, 1750 ), 2nd Marquis de Céreste and sovereign (titular) prince of the island of Nisyros was a French Military and diplomat of the first half of the 18th century. He was appointed Marshal of France in 1740 .

Life

Louis de Brancas was the eldest son of Henri de Brancas de Forcalquier, Marquis de Céreste, and Dorothée de Cheilus. He was Marquis de Céreste, Comte de Roubion , Baron de Castellet, Seigneur de Saint-Dizier, Venasque , Vitrolles , Montjustin and Juvisy, and sovereign (titular) prince of the island of Nisyros.

He entered the military and on June 15, 1699 became a colonel in the Régiment d'Orléans. On June 4, 1702 he was promoted to brigadier , on October 26, 1704 to maréchal de camp . As a diplomat he was appointed envoy of France to Madrid in 1707. On May 8, 1709 he was one of 28 commanders in the Ordre royal et militaire de Saint-Louis , on March 29, 1710 Lieutenant-général des Armées du Roi et au Gouvernement de Provence.

On February 12, 1711 he was appointed governor of Girona as part of the War of the Spanish Succession . In February 1713 he was appointed Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece (Spanish Branch, No. 660), and was accepted on November 26, 1713 in Madrid. In 1714 he became the French envoy extraordinary to Spain for the second time.

On June 3, 1724 he became a knight in the Order of the Holy Spirit . On November 2, 1727, he was appointed to Spain for a third time, this time as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary. On February 15, 1730, the Spanish king made him hereditary grandee of Spain 1st class.

On March 27, 1738 he became governor of Nantes and the Pays Nantois, as well as commander in chief of the army in Brittany. The high point of his career was his appointment as Marshal of France on February 11, 1741.

He was also Conseiller d'État ordinaire d'épée, although the dates are unclear.

On January 24, 1696 he married Elisabeth-Charlotte-Candide de Brancas, * December 1679, † August 26, 1741 Paris, daughter of Louis François de Brancas, Duc de Villars, and Louise Catherine Angélique de Fautereau de Mainières. They had eleven children, most of whom died at a young age:
