Political career
Parti socialist
When he was elected mayor of Forcalquier in 2001, he won his first political mandate. In 2004 he was elected to the regional council of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region , and became its vice-president that same year. In the 2007 parliamentary elections , he ran in the second constituency of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department , but failed in the second ballot with a good 46 percent of the vote. His second candidacy in the 2012 elections , however, was successful and he entered the National Assembly. After his election as MP, he announced his withdrawal from the regional council.
In the regional elections in December 2015 , he was the top candidate of the Parti socialiste for the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (PACA) region, but his list received only 16.6% of the vote. Castaner then decided not to run in the second ballot and instead to support the conservative Christian Estrosi in order to prevent the Front National from winning. Estrosi's list won the election with 54.8% of the vote.
En Marche
Castaner was one of the first supporters of the former economics minister Emmanuel Macron with regard to his presidential candidacy and was his press spokesman in the election campaign for the presidential election . On November 18, 2017, Castaner was elected the new chairman of his party in Lyon , he had no opponent. On October 16, 2018, he was appointed French Interior Minister in the Philippe II cabinet.
Internal security
On October 3, 2019, an IT employee from the Paris police stabbed four colleagues and was then shot. Christophe Castaner was criticized after the crime because he ruled out a terrorist motive immediately after the murders, but in the course of the investigation it quickly became clear that the perpetrator was a mentally unstable and at the same time possibly Salafist-radicalized man. Castaner then admitted deficits in recognizing radicalized citizens.
