Christian Estrosi (born July 1, 1955 in Nice ) is a former French motorcycle racer and current politician ( RPR , UMP , Les Républicains ). He was Mayor of Nice from 2008 to 2016 and again since 2017.

Estrosi was active as a motorcyclist on a national and international level in the late 1970s. Between 1975 and 1979 he won moto in the Tour de France four times . He also competed in the motorcycle world championship between 1976 and 1983 . In 1977 he also won two rounds of the Formula 750 World Championship on the Circuit de Dijon-Prenois .

As a member of the Gaullist Rassemblement pour la République (RPR) and a supporter of the then mayor Jacques Médecin , Estrosi was a member of Nice's municipal council from 1983 to 1990 and then resigned. From 1985 to 2009 he was a member of the General Council of the Alpes-Maritimes department . In the parliamentary elections in 1988 Estrosi was elected as a member of a constituency of Alpes-Maritimes in the National Assembly, to which he belonged until 1993. Since 1992 he has been a member of the Regional Council of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur , of which he was first Vice-President from 1992 to 1998 (under President Jean-Claude Gaudin ).

From 1997 to 2005 he was again a member of the National Assembly. From 2002 he was a member of the center-right collecting party Union pour un mouvement populaire (UMP), which emerged from the RPR. In the cabinet de Villepin , Estrosi was from June 2005 to May 2007 he was assistant minister for spatial planning (under Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy ). After Sarkozy was elected President, Estrosi was State Secretary for Overseas Territories in the Fillon II cabinet (under Interior Minister Michèle Alliot-Marie ) from June 2007 to March 2008 .

In the local elections in March 2008, Estrosi was elected mayor of his hometown Nice with 41.3% of the vote. He held the office of mayor for the next eight years. In addition, after a year as a Member of Parliament, he was again a member of the government from June 2009 to November 2010, as Minister for Industry (under Minister of Economic Affairs Christine Lagarde ). From December 14, 2010 he again represented the fifth constituency of Alpes-Maritimes in the National Assembly. Since 2012 he has also been President of the Métropole Nice Côte d'Azur Association of Municipalities , to which Nice and 48 surrounding municipalities belong. In the mayoral election in 2014, he was re-elected with 48.6% in the second ballot.

The UMP was renamed Les Républicains (LR) in 2015 . In the regional election in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (PACA) in December 2015, Estrosi was the top candidate of the center-right parties LR, UDI , MoDem and CPNT . He won the election with 54.8% in the second ballot against Marion Maréchal from the right-wing extremist Front National . The center-left list had withdrawn to prevent the right-wing extremists from winning. As a result, Estrosi was elected President of the Regional Council, for which he resigned as Mayor of Nice on June 13, 2016.

After the defeat of the conservative candidate François Fillon in the first round of the 2017 presidential election , he, unlike other politicians in his party, called for unconditional support for Emmanuel Macron against Marine Le Pen . On May 15, 2017, he resigned as President of the Regional Council of the PACA Region, where he was succeeded by Renaud Muselier , and was re-elected Mayor of Nice. His interim successor Philippe Pradal is now his deputy. In addition, he is now Deputy President of PACA.

On March 16, 2020, he announced that he had tested positive for the coronavirus .
