The Division 1 1937/38 was the sixth staging of the professional French football league. The championship was won by FC Sochaux , after his success of 1935 as the first French club for the second time.
mode
Eligible were the clubs that had finished the previous season no worse than 14th place, and the two promoted from the second division .
societies
This season the following teams played for the championship title:
- six clubs from the far north ( Olympique and SC Fives from Lille , Excelsior and Racing from Roubaix , plus the two newcomers Racing Lens and US Valenciennes-Anzin ),
- three from Paris and Normandy ( Racing , Red Star Olympique , FC Rouen ),
- three from the northeast ( FC Sochaux , Racing Strasbourg , FC Metz ),
- four from the southeast ( FC Sète , defending champions Olympique Marseille , AS Cannes , FC Antibes ).
Of these 16 teams, nine were among the founding members of the league, who had been continuously represented in it until then: Antibes, Cannes, Fives, Lille, Marseille, RC Paris, EAC Roubaix, Sète and Sochaux.
Season course
The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal quotient was decisive for the placement.
The champions became the team with the best attack and what parts of the press like to refer to as the “ Maginot Line ” - this meant in particular the national team series Di Lorto - Cazenave - Mattler - the best defense in the league; while Sochaux had lost the home games against Marseille and Sète, his two main competitors, and had also returned home from Marseille with a defeat. But the strength of the “Werkself from Peugeot ” was that they were able to compensate for injuries-related losses on an equal basis thanks to their good quality and quantity of players. During the entire season, there was only a fourth defeat (1: 2 in Antibes), so that Sochaux was able to keep the pursuers at a distance.
The other two co-favorites, Lille (1933 champions) and Racing Paris (1935 champions), were never able to intervene in the title race from the start; In the case of the northern French, the reason for this was the frequent gate blockade by its attackers, while the capital city dwellers were severely weakened by several high-profile departures ( Delfour , Dupuis , Kennedy , Mercier ). At the bottom of the table were Valenciennes - the "elevator team" of those years had both the weakest attack and the most punctured defense of Division 1 - and Red Star early beaten and had to vacate their place for the promoted Le Havre AC and AS Saint-Étienne the following season .
Three goalscorers set an exclamation point this season: Jean Nicolas scored seven of the nine goals of his FC Rouen in Valenciennes, with which he holds the "Trello" Abegglens record from the 1934/35 season - also against Valenciennes - which is valid to the present (2010/11) achieved - discontinued. After all, six goals in Red Stars 7-0 win against Racing Roubaix were given by André Simonyi , and with Jaguaré Bezerra de Vasconcelos from Marseille even a goalkeeper was successful who converted one penalty in the 1-1 draw at Sète and defended two opponents.
