Roger Hug

Roger Hug (born August 25, 1913 in Audincourt , † June 22, 1996 in Grand-Charmont ) was a French football player and coach who spent his entire career at FC Sochaux .

Player career

The 176 centimeter tall midfielder Hug was 17 years old when he joined the first team of FC Sochaux, founded two years earlier, in 1930. With the club he reached the qualification for Division 1 , which founded professional football in France in 1932 as the newly created top national league . In the first years as a professional he mostly played the role of a substitute player, but came to occasional missions at a time when substitutions and substitutions were not yet possible. He was called up five times during the 1934/35 season and was one of a team that secured the French championship in 1935.

In 1936, the player, mostly used in defensive midfield, advanced to become a regular in the team and, as such, played a part in making it to the national cup final in 1937 . Hug was on the pitch when Sochaux beat Racing Strasbourg 2-1 to take home the trophy. The winning streak continued for the club, so that the player was French champion for the second time, where he was involved in this title as a regular player. Due to the Second World War , official gaming operations were discontinued in 1939; Hug, who was nicknamed le sage (the wise), took part in the 1939/40 season with Sochaux in the unofficial staging of the championship and then interrupted his career.

In 1945 he returned to his club from Sochaux, which was still represented in the first division, and took part in the resumption of regular game operations after the war. Although he still came on regular assignments, it was no longer as undisputed as before; nothing changed after the club had to go into the second division in 1946. In 1947 the direct resurgence succeeded, which was, however, connected with the fact that Hug was almost completely ousted from the team and did not get more than two games in the 1947/48 season. In view of this, he ended his career at the age of 34 after 144 official first division games with six goals, 16 second division games with one goal and a few other unofficial first division games.

Coaching career

In March 1962, at the age of 48, Hug returned to FC Sochaux to work as a coach. Although he could not prevent relegation to the second division at the end of the 1961/62 season, he was allowed to keep his coaching post. In 1964 he led the team back to the top division and remained in office until he was dismissed in November 1966 after around four and a half years. Hug, who had spent more than 20 years as a player and coach in Sochaux, did not take on any other professional football coaching post.
