The Ligue 1 2002/03 was the 65th season of the top French football league and at the same time the first season under the new name Ligue 1. The season began on August 2, 2002 with the opening game EA Guingamp against Olympique Lyon (3: 3) and ended on May 24, 2003.

With the change of the name was connected that from this season 20 teams played in the first French league, whereby in the preseason only two teams were relegated, but four teams from Ligue 2 were added. As the climbers were AC Ajaccio , Racing Strasbourg , OGC Nice and Le Havre AC from the Ligue 2 this. Defending champion Olympique Lyon ended the season as champions. Lyon, AS Monaco and Olympique Marseille qualified for the UEFA Champions League . Girondins Bordeaux , FC Sochaux and AJ Auxerre qualified for the UEFA Cup via the two cup competitions and Racing Lens via the fair play rating. In the UEFA Intertoto Cup the following year EA Guingamp played, the FC Nantes Atlantique and OGC Nice. AC Le Havre, CS Sedan and ES Troyes AC had to relegate to Ligue 2 .
