The Division 1 1963-64 was the 26th staging of the professional French football league. Champion was the AS Saint-Etienne , making their second title after 1957 won.
The first match day was September 1, 1963, the last match day was June 7, 1964. There was no winter break, and games were played between the years.
societies
Eligible were the clubs that had finished the previous season no worse than in 16th place, as well as two direct promoters from the second division . Thus, the following teams played for the championship title this season:
- two clubs from the far north ( US Valenciennes-Anzin , Racing Lens ),
- four from Paris and Champagne ( Stade Français , Racing Paris , Stade Reims , UA Sedan-Torcy ),
- four from the northwest ( Stade Rennes UC , FC Rouen , SCO Angers , promoted FC Nantes ),
- one from the northeast ( Racing Strasbourg ),
- two from the southwest ( Girondins Bordeaux , Toulouse FC ),
- five from the southeast (newly promoted AS Saint-Étienne , Olympique Lyon , Olympique Nîmes , OGC Nice , defending champions AS Monaco ).
Season course
The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal quotient was decisive for the placement.
The season, at the end of which Division 1 lost three clubs with Reims, Racing Paris and Nice, which together won eleven championship titles and won the trophy ten times, began as expected: at the end of October, defending champion Monaco led the table, as did runner-up Reims was still unbeaten. Six weeks later, however, rose Saint-Étienne was at the top of the table and won the autumn championship; Monaco had only nominated a better reserve eleven for the league games against Lyon and Angers before their European Cup matches against Inter Milan and lost both matches, while Reims had to do without its playmaker Kopa for six weeks , whom the association had for his statement “The players are slaves of Clubs ”. The Monegasque remained on the heels of Saint-Étienne, but when they lost again to Lyon on Matchday 30, the way to the title was clear for the newcomer to the league. Before ASSE, only another club (Bordeaux in the 1949/50 season ) had managed to become champion. Lens, which had the most powerful attack alongside Saint-Étienne, in which two young winger - 18-year-old Lech and 16-year-old Krawczyk - fed the league shooter king Oudjani and the second point Deloffre with assists , also did surprisingly well .
Reims, on the other hand, did not recover, and even a change of coach ( Prouff replaced Cottin ) could not change the fact that the red-whites ended up on the penultimate place and were relegated directly with Nice. The same thing happened for Racing Club Paris, which at the end of November was also placed “within sight of the top of the table” before Lens with a 10-2 runaway victory - Oudjani scored six goals alone - “robbed the capital of the city”. Paris fell to 18th place, but at least worked its way up to a relegation place in the last weeks of the season . In the end, the relegation zone began at sixth place: Valenciennes-Anzin had only three points more than table 15. and first barragist Stade Français. In the relegation of the 15th and 16th against the 3rd and 4th of Division 2 , Stade Français and second division team SC Toulon prevailed; in addition, two founding clubs of the league returned for the following season with OSC Lille and FC Sochaux as direct promoters.
