Georges Polny (born February 3, 1943 in Blan , Tarn department ) is a former French football player and coach .

Player career

Polny was 17 years old when he was discovered by the talent scout of the first division club AS Saint-Étienne and brought to the club in 1960 . Despite his young age, the defender was called up four times in the top French division during the 1960/61 season at a time when substitutions and substitutions were not yet possible. Then he was able to further establish himself in the professional team and played as a left-back regularly for a team that was relegated in 1962 and won the national cup, even if he was not on the field in the final and thus not counted among the victorious eleven. A year later, as a second division champion, the direct rise again. He then ran 23 times in the jersey of the promoted team, which was able to secure the championship title at the end of the 1963/64 season.

In his early years at Saint-Étienne, the player was by no means undisputed, but had to share his place in the team with Nello Sbaiz and Régis Courbon , which is why he did not make much more than 20 league appearances per season. This changed in 1965 when he became head of the defense and ran up between 1965 and 1967 in all first division games in Saint-Étienne; previously he had given up his offensive efforts in the game to focus increasingly on defensive work. At the same time began a great series of successes for the club, which brought four championships in a row between the seasons 1966/67 and 1969/70 as well as two cup wins in 1968 and 1970; Polny was directly involved in all of these successes and did not miss the cup final like in 1962.

At the end of the club's streak in 1970, Polny lost his regular place, which he had to cede to Gérard Farison . This didn't change much when a teammate in defensive midfield was suspended in the spring of 1971; in view of this, he turned his back on the club in 1972 after twelve years.

Polny signed with the second division club AS Monaco , which despite its location in the Principality of Monaco takes part in French games. At Monaco he became a regular player and as such was involved in the rise to the top class in 1973. In the league, the team was able to save itself, while the defender met his ex-club Saint-Étienne in the 1974 cup final, but lost 2-1. In the same year he went back to the second division, where he was under contract with FC Rouen . As a high performer, he failed twice on promotion, which only succeeded in 1977 after Polny had previously been ousted from the first team. In the same year, at the age of 34, he ended his professional career after 292 first division games with three goals and 108 second division games with two goals.

Coaching career

In 1977 the ex-professional went to third division AS Beauvais , where he was intended as a player-coach. Despite relegation in 1978, he stayed with the amateur club until 1979. At this point he finally stopped playing football and was only intended as a coach at his new employer, Stade Poitiers ; for the amateur club he sat in the coaching bench from 1979 to 1980 and then ended his coaching career. He later returned to Saint-Étienne, where he worked in the management of a company.
