Antonello "Nello" Sbaiz (in France alternatively Sbaïz ; born May 8, 1941 in Ronchis ) is a former Italian football player who was active in French football throughout his career .

Career

Sbaiz was 16 years old when he came to the French first division club AS Saint-Étienne in 1957 . The defender, who was later known for a strong header game and a calm game, made his debut on May 29, 1960 at the age of 19 years in a game against the US Valenciennes-Anzin in the top national division. At a time when substitutions and substitutions were not yet possible, he was then regularly called up without being able to secure a permanent place. The year 1962 turned out to be fateful for Saint-Étienne and the club-loyal Sbaiz, as the team not only relegated to the second division, but also made it into the national cup final in 1962 . ASSE won 1-0 against FC Nancy , and the Italian was in the winning team. This enabled him to make his debut in European competition, as the club was qualified for the 1962/63 European Cup Winners' Cup . 1963 also succeeded in direct promotion, where he was still regularly in the first team, without being set.

Sbaiz made his team-internal breakthrough as a regular player after captain René Domingo sustained a long-term injury on January 19, 1964. He took over his role and at the end of the 1963/64 season he and his teammates won the championship. The place in the first eleven he was able to maintain over the following years, which the player also owed to his versatility, through which he could play in both internal and external defense. In 1967 he won his second championship title with Saint-Étienne.

Although he had been a regular for the champions to the end, he turned his back on Saint-Etienne in 1967 to move to the second division club FC Lorient . In this he was initially set, but then experienced changeable years in which he was sometimes hardly on the field. Nevertheless, he remained loyal to Lorient, with whom he reached midfield placements in the second division, even when he had to be content with a role as a supplementary player after 1970. In 1972, the then 31-year-old ended his professional career after 150 first division games with one goal and 80 second division games with two goals.
