Heppenheim fortress

The imaginative imitation of a medieval hilltop castle on a hillside , referred to in the press as Trutzburg Heppenheim , was an unauthorized building project in Heppenheim that attracted nationwide attention in Hesse through reports in the Hessenschau and on the radio.

location

The castle was built about a kilometer southeast of the Starkenburg , the landmark of Heppenheim, a town in the Bergstrasse district in southern Hesse on Bergstrasse on the edge of the Odenwald . The property was north of the L3810 state road from Heppenheim in the direction of the Erbach district , which leads over the Juhöhe into the Odenwald.

history

The beekeeper Volker Sieradzki had erected the unfinished building since 2004 himself. The idea for his part was to set up an environmental center for children. In 2005 he was refused a building permit and a demolition order was issued. However, he continued to build, ignored by the responsible authorities. In the context of a foreclosure auction of the two affected properties at the district court, the problem did not arise again until January 2012. Many Heppenheimers supported the preservation of the castle. The local editorial office of the Starkenburger Echo in Heppenheim received letters to the editor and statements almost every day. This was also discussed supra-regionally.

"We are now the city of two castles"

- Rainer Burelbach (Mayor of Heppenheim) : Echo Online

For a while, the official authorities were divided as to whether the castle should be demolished or not. Matthias Schimpf ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ), district member and responsible department head, announced that the building would be demolished. In contrast, Mayor Burelbach indicated that he would welcome the preservation of the castle.

The herb spiral shortly before the demolition

The castle builder Volker Sieradzki was certain that the authorities would not be able to demolish the castle. He processed hundreds of tons of stone and other materials. Sieradzki saw models for his castle in Scotland.

A first part of the castle complex - a herb spiral - was torn down on March 7, 2012. According to the authorities, the walls collapsed slightly during the demolition work. According to Sieradzki's statement, the district building authority had received more than 300 letters asking for the facility to be preserved. Sieradzki wanted to expand the castle significantly. With the start of the demolition work, the media response increased again. So reported in their online editions Welt Online , Focus Online , the Berliner Kurier , Frankfurter Rundschau , Hamburger Morgenpost and the Nassauische Neue Presse .

1053 users clicked on a TED on the Internet edition of the Darmstädter Echo . 75.31 percent were in favor of maintaining the stronghold on the Maiberg.

On the morning of June 6, 2012, the demolition work ordered by the building authority of the Bergstrasse district began . It took about two hours to grind the castle .
