The Division 1 1977/78 was the 40th staging of the professional French football league. Champion was the third time since 1961 the AS Monaco .
The first match day was August 3, 1977, the last match day was May 2, 1978. Although the season calendar was particularly tight due to the subsequent World Cup finals , for which France had qualified for the first time in twelve years - including several " English Weeks “- there was a relatively long winter break from December 19th to January 6th by French standards.
societies
Eligible to participate were those clubs that had finished the previous season no worse than 17th, plus three promoted teams from the second division . Thus, the following teams played for the championship title this season:
- two clubs from the far north ( Racing Lens , US Valenciennes-Anzin ),
- three from Paris and Champagne ( Paris Saint-Germain , Stade Reims , Troyes Aube Football ),
- four from the northeast ( AS Nancy , FC Metz , FC Sochaux , promoted Racing Strasbourg ),
- three from the northwest (defending champions FC Nantes , Stade Laval , newly promoted FC Rouen ),
- one from the southwest ( Girondins Bordeaux ),
- six from the southeast ( AS Saint-Étienne , Olympique Lyon , Olympique Nîmes , Olympique Marseille , OGC Nice , promoted AS Monaco ),
- one from Corsica ( SEC Bastia ).
Season course
The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference was decisive for the placement.
During the first half of the season Nantes, Marseille and Nice fought a three-way battle for the championship lead. Nice in particular came up trumps, starting with three away wins and winning the unofficial autumn championship. But the black and reds could not keep this momentum - and not for the first time - beyond the winter: Nancy (7: 3 on the Côte d'Azur ) and Lens with 3: 1 led the crash of the "young eagles" in January (Aiglons) up to eighth place in the table. On the other hand, when Nantes beat Marseille four rounds before the end of the season, everything looked like a successful title defense of Canaris , who were again extremely strong at home , who only had to concede two draws in 19 games at Stade Marcel-Saupin over the entire season. But the FCN left too many points in the opposing stadiums and even gave a point on the penultimate matchday when the bottom of the pack from Rouen was beaten; even a final 6-1 victory over Nice couldn't make up for that. Because of all things the climber from the Principality of Monaco won all of his last five matches and had a slightly worse goal difference in the final account, but one more plus point. After Bordeaux (1950) and Saint-Étienne (1964), Monaco was only the third - and to this day (2017) last - climber in league history to win the championship title straight away. With Strasbourg, a second league returnee also finished the season on the podium. "Father of the success" of the ASM was coach Leduc , who had already led Monaco to its first two championship titles in the early 1960s and who had managed with his routine to bring a team with a "by no means solid defense" so far that in June 1978 she was able to “present Princess Caroline the master's crown as a wedding present”.
At the bottom of the table, the “Red Devils” from Rouen lost their connection early on, while seven other teams had to defend themselves against relegation until the last match day. Then the table pointed 13. from Nîmes just two points more than the 18th and 19th (Lens and Troyes, respectively); and even with these two only the worse goal difference compared to Lyon decided that they had not made it through the league. In their place, returned to the following season, the SCO Angers , Lille and Paris FC in the Division 1 back.
